Gothenburg – the Scandinavian heart of future Life Science
The world’s biggest selling drug, dental implants around which bone grows and vaccines that treat cancer – all of these were developed in the Gothenburg region. Thanks to close collaboration between academia, healthcare and business, the life sciences industry has taken a strong hold here. The life sciences sector currently employs about 7,500 people. The largest employer in biomedicine is AstraZeneca.
The region has been the site of several medical achievements over the years. Over the past ten years, the number of micro companies with fewer than ten employees has increased dramatically. In Gothenburg you also find a cluster of Science Parks such as Lindholmen Science Park, Chalmers Science Park and Sahlgrenska Science Park. Today, the region is a leading center for clinical research in Sweden and home to around 450 different life science companies.
